Quick Answer. A typical multivitamin is too low-dose and uses cheap forms (oxide, cyanocobalamin, dl-tocopherol) that don't move blood markers in deficient people. Targeted single supplements at therapeutic doses, in bioavailable forms, work better for actually fixing nutritional gaps. A multi is fine as a "general insurance" if your diet is highly variable, but it won't fix vitamin D deficiency, low ferritin, or low B12. The smarter pattern: test, identify your top 3–4 actual gaps, address each with the right form at the right dose.

"Should I take a multivitamin or individual supplements?" One of the most asked questions, and the answer disappoints people: usually individual.

I'm Tatiana Zabalueva, nutritionist. Multivitamins look efficient — but most of them don't deliver what people expect. Here's why.

What's in a Typical Multivitamin

A standard multi contains 20–30 nutrients in small doses. The marketing says "complete nutrition." The reality:

  • Doses below therapeutic threshold — vitamin D often 400–800 IU when adults need 2,000–4,000 IU. Magnesium often 50 mg when 200–400 mg is therapeutic.
  • Cheap forms — magnesium oxide (4% absorption), cyanocobalamin instead of methylcobalamin, dl-alpha-tocopherol instead of natural mixed tocopherols.
  • Non-evidence-backed extras — 30 mg of randomly chosen herbs at sub-therapeutic doses just for marketing.
  • Conflicting nutrients in one pill — calcium with iron (compete for absorption), making both less effective.

The Math of Why Multis Don't Fix Deficiency

Example: a multi with 800 IU vitamin D3.

  • Daily need to raise blood level: 2,000–4,000 IU
  • 800 IU = ~400 IU absorbed (if with fat)
  • Effect on blood level over 12 weeks: minimal

Same pattern across most ingredients. The total package adds up to "expensive urine" + tiny incremental gains.

When a Multivitamin Actually Makes Sense

Three cases:

  1. Highly variable diet (irregular eating, very limited foods) — a multi as "insurance" against missing micronutrients.
  2. Specific life stages — prenatal multivitamins (folate + iron + iodine + DHA) are designed therapeutically and have evidence.
  3. Travel / disrupted routine — short-term backup when you can't take individual supplements consistently.

None of these are "general health" — they're specific situations.

The Targeted Approach

Smarter pattern: test, identify gaps, address each:

The Curated Stack — A Middle Ground

The honest version of "multivitamin convenience" is a curated stack:

  • Foundation: D3+K2, magnesium bisglycinate, omega-3 — most people are deficient in 1–2 of these
  • Targeted additions: based on personal context (vitamin C if more sick season, iron if low ferritin, B12 if vegan)
  • Quality forms: not what's cheapest to put in a multi
  • Therapeutic doses: enough to actually move biomarkers

What About AG1 / Athletic Greens?

"Greens" powders are a category between multis and curated stacks:

  • Pros: better forms than cheap multis, more thoughtful formulation

  1. Test first. 25-OH-D, B12, ferritin, magnesium-RBC. Without this you're guessing.
  2. Address top 2–3 gaps with targeted forms at therapeutic doses.
  3. Skip the rest. Don't take 15 supplements "just in case." Each one adds cost and complexity without proven benefit.
  4. Reassess in 8–12 weeks. If you fixed the gaps, you can reduce or stop.
